I’m gonna slowly post some photos from an ongoing series I’ve been working on. There’s no title really to it yet, so I’ll just call it Highway 36 Series for now. I’m currently living in Eastern Colorado (near Burlington,CO) and I drive into Denver almost every week (about a 2 1/2hr drive).

I take Highway 36 for the bulk of my drive to and from Denver. As you drive 36 you go through a few towns that look as if they’re ghost towns when you’re just driving through (and one town that is empty). These are towns that have seen better days, and maybe will see some better days again in the future. Highway 36 used to be the way to go to Denver when coming from the east, but once I-70 was opened a lot of the travelers stop going through 36, and with that also taking residents and jobs away from 36.

As I drive through each week I slowly and random stop at certain buildings and grab a shot with my pinhole camera. Originally I was just doing the shots to get used to the Zero Image camera I was using, but now I’ve seen a series developing out of this.

This Church was the first one I took a picture of. I would pass it for weeks and it would always catch my eye, for some reason it reminds me of an old HBO show called Carnivale. The show, which takes place during the dust bowl era, kind of had an apocalyptic theme to it and I always think this image shares a small visual similarity to that show.
